We help students adjust to the demands of law school by offering programs that focus on professional and academic development, and providing a network of friends and alumni. At the same time, LaLSA is a source of dedicated Latinx students who provide public service to the large and diverse Latinx community, from mentoring Latinx children in lower income neighborhoods to providing bilingual assistance to adults.
Throughout the year, we hold networking events to connect NYU Latinx law students to both private practice and public interest professionals, spanning a wide array of practice areas so all student interests are accommodated. LaLSA members use those networks for mentorship and job opportunities in the future.
Law school can feel stressful and isolating, especially for students of color going through their first year. LaLSA provides a community to lift up and encourage each other, while trying to ease some of the stress. We host mixers, retreats, and other social events to provide a space for students to connect, relax, and build memories beyond the reading.
We aim to use our legal education as an advocacy tool for change. We provide students with tangible ways to remain connected to the diverse city around them and believe it critically important to use our platform within the law school to educate our peers on issues pertinent to our community. We join other groups on campus in advocating for issues important to our community and hold public service events, including an annual Spring Break trip to provide pro bono assistance to non-profit organizations around the country.
The legal profession and law school can be difficult to navigate for budding Latinx lawyers. We do everything we can to make it easier. We provide opportunities for students to work with and meet upperclassmen and alumni who can serve as mentors in school and throughout life.
The law school experience starts when prospective students first apply to their law schools. We aim to encourage and support prospective NYU Law Latinx students by encouraging them to apply, assisting with applications, hosting students to visit, and lobbying Admissions to continue its own outreach to Latinx communities so that law school can be accessible to all.
We strive to spotlight issues that directly affect our communities in our country and around the globe in the academic discourse of our law school. NYU LaLSA hosts a forum panel each year to bring together legal scholars to address legal issues important to our community, discussing issues like immigration and detention policy and refugee assistance.
